The Length and Weight of a Pencil: What is it?
First and foremost, it’s important to mention exactly what type of pencil we’ll be referring to. In this article we will talk about the famous wooden #2 pencils. We will also talk about other interesting information about this pencil you’ll love to know about.
So, How long is a pencil really?
We’re going to talk about the traditional and highly reputable Dixon Ticonderoga #2 pencils. This pencil is globally considered to be the best pencil ever created. The Dixon Ticonderoga #2 pencil dates back to the 1700’s, 1795 to be exact. Because of its popularity and simplicity, this pencil will be the best pencil to examine.
Before measuring this tool, it’s important to know that the length is measured in centimeters (cm) or inches (in) because the length is larger than 1 centimeter (cm) and larger than 1 inch (in). However, because the width is less than 1 centerimer (cm) and less than 1 inch (in), you would need to use millimeters (mm) instead.
Now let’s get into the numbers.
A classic #2 pencil is approximately 7 inches (18 cm) long and has a diameter of approximately 7-8 millimeters (mm). Obviously, this number will change slightly when sharpening is factored in. A Dixon Ticonderoga Pencil consists of cedar, with their lead being a combination of clay, wax, and mainly graphite.
Are Mechanical Pencils Longer than Standard #2 Pencils?
Mechanical pencils are approximately the same size as wooden pencils. Usually mechanical pencils are 5 inches – 6 inches long (13cm – 15cm). The width will change from brand to brand.
Now How Much Does a #2 Pencil Weigh?
It depends on the quality of the pencil. Usually, cheaper pencils are made from cheaper wood that are usually thinner, lighter, and with less density.
A standard Dixon Ticonderoga Pencil weighs approximately .25 ounces (oz), or 0.015625 pounds (lbs) or 6.5 Grams (g). This is measured on a digital scale with a completely intact pencil.
Mechanical pencils have much more weight due to the fact that they consist of brass and metal parts. On average, mechanical pencils weigh approximately 30 grams (g) or .8 ounces (oz).
Hopefully all of this will give you a better understanding of the measurements of a standard pencil. You can check out more at TurtleCraft.com !
